COUNSELING PSYCHOLOGY?

This is a question asked by most the students in this era to the professors including myself. One of my exams, I was asked by a professor but I could not give him the exact answer of what is Counselling Psychology? Who can administer counseling and what is the role of clinical psychologist? Counseling is administered in most of the areas by Counsellors and others. During the pandemic period there were so many psychologists who came forward for free counseling to empower the humanity from the falls belief. To say that truth, so many people gave up their lives because they had no people to support or give them hope to live a life or march ahead.  So as a psychological Counsellor and Psychotherapist I have charted down the meaning of the question asked above. It is to know who plays what role and to clarify the doubts of budding psychologists.

The work of counseling Psychologist is very similar to that of the clinical psychologist. The difference between them is that counseling psychologist generally works with normal people who have milder emotional and personal problems of adjustment. On the other hand clinical psychologists deal with psychological problems of abnormal people. Counseling psychologists are consulted by people with specific questions like choice of career or specific problems like marital adjustment,  problems of adolescents or problems of old age, a problems of students at school or adjustment problems between parents and child etc.

Counseling psychologists make extensive use of psychological tests to measure aptitudes, interests and personality characteristics. They may use psychotherapy in an attempt to help with these problems. They may use psychotherapy in an attempt to help with these problems. They suggest ways to their clients to overcome their problems. So counseling psychologists have 3 distinct, though not mutually exclusive purposes:

1.     To help person who are presently experiencing difficulty. This is the remedial or rehabilitative role.

2.     To anticipate, circumvent and if possible to forestall difficulties which may arise in the future. This is the preventive role.

3.     To help individuals to plan, obtain and derive maximum benefits from kinds of experiences which will enable them to discover develop their potentialities. This is the educative and developmental role.
